πŸ”„ Windows Restarts: What to Expect

Starting soon, your Windows laptop will remind you to restart after important updates have been installed. You stay in control for up to 14 days - and if you're away when the time runs out, you get at least 3 extra grace days once you're back.

πŸ’‘ Why are we doing this?

Many security fixes - for Windows itself and for everyday apps like browsers and office tools - only take effect after a restart. Until then, your device keeps running the old, vulnerable version, even though the fix is already installed. A device that goes weeks without restarting is effectively weeks behind on security, even if it looks like everything is up-to-date.

🎯 Nice side-effect: restarting also clears out the background clutter that quietly builds up over time - so your device stays fast and responsive instead of gradually sluggish.

⚠️ What must be considered

  • Windows only. This change applies to Windows devices only - Mac devices are not affected.
  • Overnight restarts can happen within the 14 days too. If you leave your device switched on, Windows may restart it by itself overnight - this is standard Windows behavior and cannot be prevented.

❗️ Heads up: in the rare case you leave unsaved work open overnight, that work could be lost. Save your open documents before leaving your device on overnight - a good habit generally.

🧭 How does it work

Stage 1: You're in control (Days 1-14)

  1. Updates get installed.
Windows shows a friendly notification and lists the restart under Settings > Windows Updates.

  2. Restart whenever it suits you - end of day, lunch break, before a meeting.
    Just click "Restart now".

  3. Do nothing, and Windows may handle it for you.
If you neither restart nor pick a time, Windows may quietly restart overnight, outside working hours - you might just find your laptop freshly restarted in the morning.

Stage 2: Scheduling - pick the moment that suits you

  1. Choose "Pick a time.
Windows lets you schedule the restart for a day and time of your choosing.
  2. Pick your slot - for example, tonight after work.

  3. That's it.
Your laptop restarts itself at that moment, no further action needed.

Stage 3: After day 14 - a stronger reminder

If you haven't restarted after 14 days, Windows shows a more insistent reminder with a specific restart time.

🎯 Tip: you can still restart earlier yourself - that's always the better option, since you pick the moment.

Stage 4: After the deadline - the automatic restart

  1. The deadline passes (day 14, or later if your device was off in the meantime, thanks to the grace days).
  2. Windows tries outside working hours first (before 8:00 or after 17:00).
  3. If a restart is still outstanding, you get one final 15-minute warning to save your work.

  4. The restart happens - it usually takes just a few minutes.

❗️ The one thing to remember: restart on the day you first see the notification, and you'll never encounter Stages 3 and 4 at all.

❓ Quick answers

  • Will I lose my work? Normally, no - the scheduled restart and the day-14 enforcement both prompt you to save first. The one edge case is an overnight restart within your 14-day window with unsaved work open (see "What must be considered" above), so saving regularly is still a good habit.

  • Can it restart while I'm presenting? Windows always prefers restarting outside working hours and warns you 15 minutes in advance. Restart within the 14-day window yourself, and you'll never be affected during the day.

  • How long does a restart take? Usually 3-5 minutes. The longer a restart is postponed, the more updates queue up - restarting regularly keeps it quick.

  • Does this affect my Mac? No - this applies to Windows devices only.
