Adding your Microsoft 365 Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) code to 1Password enhances security and convenience, allowing you to manage 2FA codes directly in your password manager.
Step 1: Set up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for Microsoft 365
- Log in to Microsoft 365: Go to your Microsoft 365 account and sign in.
-
Access Security Settings:
- Click on your profile picture or initials in the top right corner.
- Select View account.
- Navigate to Security info or Update info under the Security or Security & Privacy section.
-
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA):
- Follow the prompts to enable 2FA. Microsoft will usually ask you to download Microsoft Authenticator, but you can skip this step if youβre setting up with 1Password instead.
- Choose to Add Another Authenticator App: When prompted to select an authenticator app, choose the option to use another authenticator app instead of Microsoft Authenticator.
-
Scan QR Code or Copy Secret Key:
- Microsoft will display a QR code or provide a secret key. Keep this page open, as youβll need to scan or enter this code into 1Password.
Step 2: Add the OTP to 1Password
- Open 1Password: Launch the 1Password app or access it through the browser extension.
-
Select the Vault and Item:
- Open the vault where you want to store your Microsoft 365 login.
- If you already have a Microsoft 365 item, click to edit it. Otherwise, create a new item by selecting New Item and choosing Login.
-
Add the OTP (One-Time Password) Field:
- In the login item, scroll down and look for the option to add an OTP or One-Time Password field.
- Select Set up a one-time password.
-
Enter or Scan the OTP Secret Key:
- If you have the QR code open on the Microsoft 365 page, select Scan QR code in 1Password, then follow the prompts to scan it.
- If you're using a secret key instead, paste it into the One-Time Password field manually.
-
Save the Changes:
- Once the OTP is set up, save the item in 1Password.
Step 3: Test the OTP
- Go back to Microsoft 365 and continue the 2FA setup.
- When prompted, open 1Password and retrieve the one-time code from the Microsoft 365 entry.
- Enter this code into the Microsoft 365 verification prompt to complete the 2FA setup.
Tips
- Backup Your Codes: Store backup codes provided by Microsoft in a secure place.
- Test Periodically: Test the OTP in 1Password occasionally to ensure itβs syncing correctly with Microsoft 365.
