FileVault is Apple's built-in solution for encrypting the hard drive on a Mac. This means that the data on your Mac is secured, and without the correct password, it cannot be accessed. In this article, we'll provide an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of using FileVault and how we handle its rollout.
Advantages & Disadvantages of FileVault
FileVault's primary advantage lies in encrypting your Mac's hard drive, securing your data like a secret code that only your password can decipher. Additionally, FileVault is pre-installed on every Mac, ensuring accessibility for all users without requiring additional software downloads.
Using FileVault may result in a slightly slower system startup due to the need to unlock the encrypted drive before full boot-up. It's worth mentioning that if your employees forget their password and misplace the recovery key, there's a possibility of data being inaccessible.
Activating FileVault on Your Mac
For Mac users, activating FileVault is a straightforward process. If you give us the go-ahead, we can enable FileVault for you promptly. Your employees then have to walk through these 1-3 simple steps:
- Notification or Prompt: They may receive a notification or prompt informing them that FileVault encryption will be enabled on their Mac. This message typically includes details about the encryption process and any potential impacts.
- Encryption Initialization: Once they give their consent (if prompted to), the encryption process begins. During this phase, the Mac's hard drive is encrypted, converting data into a secure format that requires the user's password for decryption (not impacting their ability to work with the device during that time).
- Initial Restart or Log Out: To complete the encryption setup (and for your employees to show up as encrypted in the deeploi platform), they have to either log out and log back in or restart their devices. This step is crucial for FileVault to fully integrate into the system.
Note: Please note that users who have already activated FileVault independently do not transfer the recovery key to us, we can only provide it for those who haven't initiated FileVault activation on their own.
